What is our unique approach to substance use recovery? Our approach to recovery is rooted in connection, compassion, and individualization. We prioritize building meaningful relationships over assigning diagnoses, and we foster a nonjudgmental environment where clients feel safe to explore their experiences. Our therapists often share insights from their own journeys, creating a collaborative space that emphasizes empathy and mutual understanding. Instead of traditional 12-step facilitated or peer-led groups, we offer therapeutically guided process groups that encourage open dialogue, development of personal insights and encourage vulnerability and authentic connection at its core. We recognize that recovery is not a one-size-fits-all process. While we support abstinence-based goals, we also honor harm reduction strategies tailored to individual needs. This may include exploring alternatives like non-alcoholic beverages, using CBD or THC as less harmful substitutes, or moderating substance use to minimize negative consequences. Our commitment is to meet you where you are, supporting your unique path toward healing and well-being.

What will my initial intake session be like?Think of your first session as a relaxed, get-to-know-you conversation. Each of our therapists brings their own unique style—Julia is inquisitive and thoughtful, Lauren offers a cozy, conversational approach, and Kim focuses on creative consideration of your strengths. Despite these differences, you'll find that none of us follow a rigid script or checklist during that first conversation. While we'll cover essential topics like confidentiality and our practice policies, the heart of the session is about you—your relationships, your aspirations, and the areas where you feel something is missing. Together, we'll start to outline your goals, keeping things flexible to adapt as we learn more about your needs. This session is the beginning of a collaborative journey, and we're here to support you every step of the way.

What can I expect in an individual therapy session? At Planting Seeds Recovery, we see individual therapy as the moment when the lights come on in a dim room—suddenly, patterns that once felt confusing begin to make sense. With the groundedness of a steadying hand, therapy becomes a space to turn self-reflection into a regular practice. We’ll explore underlying factors contributing to substance use and develop personalized strategies to navigate life’s challenges more effectively. And because substance use is our specialty, you won’t need to explain or defend your experience here. We understand the shame and stigma that can come with it—and we’re here to replace that with curiosity, compassion, and real support. You will find our curiosity and love for the process of personal growth to inspire you to keep going!

Group therapy seems scary – what is it like?Group therapy is where some of the most transformative work happens—and where we, as clinicians, feel most energized. At Planting Seeds Recovery, we take a relational approach, believing that many struggles with substance overuse stem from unmet needs for connection. Our therapy groups are process-oriented, meaning offer a supportive environment to explore and strengthen these connections while sharing your thoughts and emotional experiences. We thoughtfully curate each group with your goals in mind, creating a space to practice new ways of relating without the pressures of daily life. It's a place to understand and potentially reshape how you engage with others, all within a compassionate community. We ask for a commitment of six sessions to allow meaningful connections to develop. Many find that the relationships and insights gained here are profoundly life-changing. We have a few different groups running and we work to match you with the group and peers that would fit your needs best. We pride ourselves on keeping these groups small (6-9 people) and cohesive. Clients rave about the growth that happens as a result of the group experience!

Can I move between group, individual, and couples therapy?Yes, absolutely! We encourage a flexible approach to therapy, recognizing that your needs may evolve over time. Many clients begin with individual sessions to gain personal insights and then transition into group therapy to practice new skills in a supportive environment. Some choose to maintain individual therapy alongside group sessions to process experiences more deeply. Others may involve their partner in couples therapy to address relational dynamics. This integrative approach allows you to tailor your therapeutic journey to your unique circumstances. Our team collaborates to ensure continuity of care, so you won't need to start over when shifting between therapy types. Instead, each modality builds upon the other, fostering comprehensive growth and healing.
-
Can I still see my outside therapist?Yes, you can. Maintaining a relationship with your current therapist alongside our addiction-informed therapy can provide comprehensive support tailored to your unique needs. We encourage such collaborations, as they often enhance the therapeutic process by addressing different aspects of your well-being. With your consent, we'll coordinate with your outside therapist to ensure our approaches are aligned and complementary. This collaboration helps prevent overlapping efforts and ensures a cohesive treatment plan that respects the work you've already undertaken. Our goal is to create a seamless support system that honors your progress and facilitates continued growth.

Is Planting Seeds Recovery the right place for me (or us)?If you're feeling stuck around your own substance use—or the impact of a loved ones—Planting Seeds Recovery offers a safe, supportive space to explore what is beneath the surface. We are big on warmth, reliability, and real curiosity, not judgment. Whether you opt for individual work, prefer the community afforded by group therapy, or would benefit from couples focused therapy around how substances have impacted your relationship, we offer it all. If at any point you feel we aren’t the right fit, we’ll stay alongside you until we create an alternative path. Everyone’s story is unique, but after years of working alongside clients, we've noticed some familiar patterns. Most people have spent a long time trying to manage things on their own— wrestling with their substance use, making promises to themselves, and still feeling stuck. Eventually, it gets exhausting to go it alone. That’s when many people throw up their hands, take a deep breath, and decide to let someone in. They’re not looking for judgment—they’re looking for partnership, accountability, and real support. Whether you're navigating a crisis or you're just tired of feeling stuck, you're not alone. We speak your language—and we’re here when you're ready.

I’m not certain I have a “problem.” Is therapy right for me?Absolutely. At Planting Seeds Recovery, we believe that if you're curious about your relationship with substances, you're already engaging in meaningful self-reflection—a vital step toward personal growth. Therapy isn't solely for those who identify with having a "problem." Many individuals seek support to explore their habits, motivations, and the roles substances play in their lives. Some discover that addressing underlying factors contributing to substance use leads to significant positive changes without necessitating complete abstinence. Others find that substances may hinder the connections and fulfillment they seek, choosing to reduce or eliminate use in alignment with their personal goals. Our approach is rooted in understanding and collaboration, free from judgment or pressure. Whether you're contemplating change or simply seeking clarity, therapy can provide a supportive space to navigate your journey.

How do I get started? Some clients like to start with a free 15-minute consultation—it’s a great chance to ask any questions, meet your potential therapist, and get a feel for our tone and style before committing. Others are ready to dive right in and book an initial intake session, especially if they’ve been referred by someone they trust. Whatever pace feels right to you, we’ve made it easy to schedule both online. Schedule your free 15 minute consultation or initial intake session here.

Should I start with group, individual, or couples therapy? You don't have to have it all figured out before you start. It's a bit like starting a new fitness journey— you might know you want to feel stronger, but you're not expected to know exactly which exercises will get you there. We’ll work together during an intake session to find the right path based on where you are and what you’re hoping for. And because growth isn't linear, we stay flexible. You might begin with individual therapy, then shift toward group work to deepen connection skills, or realize it’s time to invite a partner into the process through couples’ work. Many schedule a free 15 minute consultation or initial intake session to work with us to map out an initial starting point. This is our passion, and you will benefit from our seasoned therapists feedback. Schedule your free 15 minute consultation or initial intake session here

Does Planting Seeds Recovery work with couples? At Planting Seeds Recovery, Lauren Adsem specializes in working with couples impacted by one or both partners’ substance overuse. Couples’ work typically begins with a joint intake session, where both partners come together. Afterward, each person has an individual session to share their story and goals privately before reconvening as a couple. Most couples seek to repair trust betrayals tied to substance overuse and reconnect with healthier communication tools as they navigate everyday challenges. Our approach focuses on rebuilding connection, fostering honest conversations, and supporting mutual growth.

How can I support my loved one in their journey toward recovery?Supporting a loved one through substance overuse or early recovery can be overwhelming. Whether your partner is actively struggling or newly sober, it’s common to feel isolated, stuck, or unsure how to help—especially when you're ready for change and they are not taking action or moving at the pace that you desire. At Planting Seeds Recovery, we believe your wellbeing matters too. Lauren Adsem specializes in supporting partners through these complex dynamics, offering a compassionate space to process your experiences, set healthy boundaries, and better understand substance overuse patterns with empathy and informed perspective. Seeking support for yourself isn’t giving up on your partner—it’s an act of care for both yourself and the relationship. Kim Oglesby specializes in empowering family members in healing wounds from betrayal, grief and loss, and build an understand of how to reconnect with self and develop a roadmap for moving forward. By focusing on your own growth, you create a stronger foundation to offer genuine, non-enabling support when your loved one is ready.

How do you handle reporting for monitored programs? Our clinicians are well-versed in the requirements of various monitoring programs such as the Health Professionals Services Program (HPSP), Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS), Child Protective Services, or custody-related processes, and strive to support your journey without compromising the therapeutic relationship. Our approach is designed to uphold your therapeutic confidentiality while meeting the necessary reporting obligations of these programs. We are committed to transparency and collaboration. Our reports are concise and focused, providing only the specific information required to safeguard your privacy and support your recovery goals.
-
Can you work with other providers (like my lawyer, therapist, or case manager)? We recognize that healing is most effective when it's supported by a cohesive network of care. That's why we actively collaborate with other professionals in your support system, including lawyers, therapists, case managers, and other healthcare providers. Our approach to collaboration is grounded in transparency and intentionality. We prioritize clear communication and shared goals, ensuring that all parties are aligned in supporting your well-being. Before any information is shared, we obtain your consent and keep you informed about the nature and purpose of the collaboration.
-
How do you protect my privacy? We are deeply committed to safeguarding your privacy and ensuring the confidentiality of your personal health information. Our approach fully adheres to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and offers additional protection under 42 CFR Part 2 regulations, given our work in the substance use field. Our priority is transparent communication. We will always inform you of how your information is used and shared, and we will obtain your consent before disclosing any personal health details, except when required by law (ask us about mandated reporting). Additionally, we take a “no diagnosis” approach to your care. We believe that a diagnosis is not necessary to provide excellent care, and we understand that having “Substance Use Disorder” listed in your medical record can be intimidating. As a private-pay clinic, we do not require a diagnosis unless you specifically request it. We avoid billing insurance, which is often the driver behind diagnostic labeling.
